Yesterday afternoon, my husband and I spent several hours trimming and tidying up the yard, bushes, and flower beds. While I worked, I had the opportunity to look closely at the remains of a luxurious growing season. Perhaps you think there is nothing to see in a garden this time of year. And, if you are looking for the vibrance and voluptuousness of summer, you would be right. It is true that the plants I tucked in for a long winter’s nap were mere skeletons of their former glorious summer selves – dried out, brown, and brittle.
And yet….
These perennials displayed a spare, fragile grace that I found beautiful and moving in its own way. So, smack in the middle of raking leaves and pulling weeds, I felt compelled to grab the camera and attempt to capture the fleeting and inherently sad loveliness I was seeing. I’m sharing the best of the shots here along with some images from the summer. It’s quite a contrast, don’t you agree? Let me know what you think.

Last night was such a sublime evening that I had to grab my camera and wander around the yard for a bit. The combined magic of soft light and luxurious colors was simply too tempting to resist. Below are some of the things I discovered as I drifted about. This is my own little outdoor world through my eyes.

Peonies, in all their ruffled loveliness, are a welcome sign that summer has almost arrived. Most of the blooms on my babies are past their prime, but I managed to find a few pink ones that were willing to put on a show for the camera. Welcome, Summer! -Please linger a little longer than these ethereal beauties.
Spring is taking her sweet, old time arriving at my house and the dilly-dallying is wearing my patience thin. I’ve started looking elsewhere for the promises of renewal and growth I’ve been desperately craving after this long and dreary winter. The substitutes I’ve found, the bouquets of tulips and the forced daffodil and hyacinth bulbs purchased from the grocery store and humble road-side stand, have been more than adequate stand-ins for the real thing. They’ve brought a freshness and grace to my winter-weary home and temporarily satisfied my need for the beauty and color of this long-awaited season.

Because this half of the Flufflypants Gang was so intent on interfering with my carefully composed images (ha!), I thought I’d satisfy his ego and give him the spotlight for a moment, too. What a poser!
Have a wonderful day!
